VW Golf GTI - Singing in the rain Jan 28. 0571

If you haven’t seen the new VW Golf GTI ad

Singing in the rain

Via DavidReviews.com:

To some, the other idea of Gene Kelly performing an array of modern dance moves may be anathema but even they will have to concede that the ad is a technological triumph as footage of Kelly from Singing In The Rain is seamlessly melded with new footage to create a remix that is simply staggering.

In any case, Gene Kelly was very progressive in his thinking on dance and if this ad has him turning in his grave, it will surely be because he is trying to emulate the elaborate dance moves that the masters of digital manipulation show him achieving in this terrific commercial.

As a captivating piece of film, this ad is an undoubted success but what makes it especially admirable is that, unlike so many car commercials, the striking imagery is made relevant by the central concept – namely, that the new Golf GTi is “the original, updated”.

What fantastic ad creative. That’s got to be one of the best car ads of the year.

Posted by Lucy on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

My brother is part of the VW in house advertising team. before the “singing in the rain” concept was decided up(at a very late date) They were going to go with a summer concept and this was the track they inteded to use:

http://www.web13030.vs.netbenefit.co.uk/video.html”

It is from a little known artist and the song infact debuted several years ago

http://www.lucycarr.com”

was the one who did it.

Posted by derek on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Yep Ive been listening to it over and over, just want a copy of the vid to keep

Posted by nig on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Somebody already said this, btu anyway, more detail.

The first guy, is Jay walker, the quick scene, then its David Elsewhere, who does the jerky hands move, but then its B-boy Crumbs, who does the lampost hold thing. Then the guy who jumps into the puddle is Jay walker again, then B-boy crumbs does the great finale.

Speaking of the new Ford Mustang commercial. It’s been in the US since October 2004 and is about to start airing in the Great White North. I think it’s the best commercial of all time. Steve McQueen rocks! I found the website of the Canadian actor (David Stuart) who stars in the spot (he’s the live one). He has a copy of the 1 minute commercial on his site as well as awesome spots for Kyocera, MSN, Excite.com, Greyhound and others…check it out at http://www.david-stuart.net

Posted by Jaimito on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

you can always look for the video on the P2P networks such as emule.

Posted by wormfirm on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

thanks Phoebe been looking everywhere for that tune!!

> Then the guy who jumps into the puddle is Jay walker again, then B-boy crumbs does the great finale.

The turn in the puddle is SO one of Elsewere’s moves!

I’d be pretty pissed off if I was Crumbs or Jay Walker. All the publicity I’ve seen has been about Elsewhere.

The official line on the ad is that they tried to recreate the old film set (walls, streets, rain etc.) and techniques as exactly as possible. I want to know if they put milk in the rainwater like they did back in the original.

Das Movie ist einfach schön gemacht, schade das es nicht noch länger ist. Einen schönen gruß aus Ratingen. (Germany)

Posted by Andre on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I just have a comment about the GTI ad and the post from TIM Feb 1, 07:18 PM…you need to get a life…that production is probably some of the best you will ever see.

If there is one thing that really winds me up, it’s when someone who is unable to achieve what they strive for, feels the need to belittle anothers creative output to compensate.

Posted by PW on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

You can find the highest quality encoding of that video on the author’s website, the direct url is:

http://www.ne-o.co.uk/vwgolf.mov

It’s slightly better than what’s pasted above.

hey guys, i downloaded a pretty neat video version on the website of the ad producers: http://www.ne-o.co.uk

enjoy

Posted by david rault on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I think that this a good web site.

Posted by joshua blythman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

The Mint Royale video is available here . It is in it’s way a take on the ad’s theme and very nicely done, though not on par with Mr. Elsewhere, IMO. :)

Posted by Jaroneko on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Waiting in the rain is not the same song. They have now released the full version and it’s on iTunes as Singing in the Rain.

Posted by Eby on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I downloaded the Mint Royale track via Limewire… But it seems that the track was remixed by professional engeeners to be used as the ad’s sountrack. The Equalization, ambience and overall sonic quality (as well the kick and snare drum samples) are much better in the ad version.

Posted by Luke on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

the songs iTunes for all who care under the name “waiting in the rain”. search for mint royal. its just 99 cents!

Posted by Thomas Averin on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

thanks for that it was the bees knees send in more. come on the arsenal. kelly brook is sooooooo buff.

Posted by ryan on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Definitely a blue mask [maybe green] for editing. You can see also, when he’s moving away from the lampost, how the face does kind of lag. You can see it chasing after the head a little. That’s minor anyway, because I didn’t even notice it until after I looked hard [I thought it was all done by a super-cool dude who LOOKED like Gene Kelly].

Here’s the best-quality one I can find

I’d REALLY like an HDTV widescreen capture of this commercial though. The 750MPH site gives a lesser-quality video than what I’ve already seen. If you need hosting, maybe this site will help you: Found it somewhere…

My question is this: has this commercial been shown in the US yet? I don’t watch much TV, so I wouldn’t know. This’ll definitely be one of those videos that I’ll never get rid of! I also think they [Mint Royale] should make a music video based directly on the theme of the commercial, since it would make an excellent music video on its own.

Posted by BioGenx2b on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

One question.  If the dancers are elswhere, jay or crumbs, how the flying fajitas did they get gene’s face on him?  especially the close up scene jsut after the lampost stunt.

Posted by Sambo on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

hi, i just found out that the single of “singing in the rain” will be released in june just before the album.

the release comes on hope&faith in conjunction with direction. have fun.

Posted by alfi on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Socom, you are a true legend! Top marks bro :o)

Posted by Jakarta Lord on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

J, you say you video’ed the ad…

Is there anyway you can record it digitally in it’s HIGHEST quality?

I would love to have this ad in its

full splendour. It’s so hard to find (high quality).

Posted by shaz on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I video’d the ad the other night and I must have watched it 50 times, I realy need that music. Where can I get it ?

Posted by j on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Yea i was thinking the same thing myself, David Elsewhere is the bomb. he dances like him, but Elsewhere is one scrawny guy and that guy doesnt look scrawny enough, but then again, it looks like thats 3 layers of clothing he has on.

Posted by Bjorn on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Can anyone confirm this is breakdancer “David Elsewhere” doing the robot dance moves?

Posted by Mike on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

That site ain’t coming up fast enough. I want that tune like yesterday :(

I just hope it’s a longer mix than what’s on the 30 second commercial.

Posted by Trachalio on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Oh my god! that advert kicks ass! how sad is that! but it really does. ive just downloaded it and ive been watching it over and over again for the past 2 hours.

Posted by emily on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

The music was remixed by Mint Royale (http://www.mint-royale.com) but you won’t find it on their site.  Some of the news sites are saying that when VW launches the new GTI website with this ad campaign, a club remix of the song will be available for download.

Posted by nateinabox on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

There’s a moment “he is” wearing a white gloves.. OPS! XD

Posted by edudu on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I couldn’t find a copy of the song, so I ripped it. Contact me on my site if you want a copy and I’ll send it to ya.

Posted by Goob on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

For the audio on the VW ad try these peeps, they made it!

Posted by anon on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

No idea, but yes it’s pretty neat. I guess you could always rip it from the Mov file. :?

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Anyone know who did the audio remix?? it’s wicked I want it!!!!!!!!

Posted by mark on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I found a link to the Ford Mustang ad. No way near as nice as I hoped it might have been, and not a patch on the Puma ad.

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

That VW ad is amazing isnt it!

Posted by duncan on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

“footage of Kelly from Singing In The Rain is seamlessly melded with new footage”

It is good but it is far from seamless.

Posted by Tim on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I’ve not seen the Mustang ad, but Ford used Steve McQueen in the original Puma ads here in the UK. I’ll have to see if I can dig out a link…

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

While a neat ad – it’s too much like some older ads – most recently the one for the new Mustang with Steve McQueen back from the dead.

I personally liked the exploding Polo ad much better.

Posted by Jim on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I thought it was david elsewhere but the backflips made me decide otherwise but that could always be another person just doin the backflips

Posted by William on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I read somewhere that there was actually 3 different dancers in that clip

Posted by Anon on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

There are some nice video clips on the ‘Milk and Cookies’ site showing David Elsewhere in action, pretty amazing stuff.

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Found a remix here

Posted by Socom on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

For those of you trying to get hold of a rip of the track try this guy.

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

I really, really, really want that remix, i cant find it anywhere on the internet and i cant record it from the advert clear enough. Does anyone where i can get it?

Posted by WakoNako on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

yea it’s a Mint Royale remix of the orig Singing in the Rain.

I got a smile on my face!

Posted by Mike on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Hello , does anyone know where to get the song ?? I like the Ad but the music is fantastic !!!

Posted by Spooky on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Anyone got a copy of that song they can send me?  Thanks.

Posted by rob on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Posted by Red on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Posted by tom on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

hey just wanna say Mint Royale did the song but i cant find it!! :P plz send it me… thanjks :)

Posted by tom on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

i also want the music from the ad, i watch the ad so many times and every time i like it better!

Posted by bb_firest on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Hey, i thought that they used keyframe animating to get some of the more amazing moves on the ad, like they animated gollum on Lord of the rings. 5they recorded the actor (andy skerkis) perfoming as gollum and to make him more nimble they animated some parts of him. watch the 4 disk DVDs. i want that music!!!!!

Posted by Jimmy on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Have u seen the film ‘U got served’?

Elsewhere plays a nice part near the end. Looks like a spider!

Posted by Phil on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

hello mummy im on da internet

Posted by ur mum on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Thanks for letting us all know Mike! :)

Posted by Nathan Pitman on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Well I had money riding on it being Elsewhere doing at least part of the dancing in there – and now im 20 bucks richer :D

I actually emailed the directors of the ad and apparently the first person is J Walker, then the second is Elsewhere (can’t deny the style) and the last one is Crumbs.  :) cheers.

Posted by Mike on 28/01/2005 at 03:46 PM

Hey Mike, Pretty awesome! I read just a little bit of it. ;)

I think not. So let us discover some of the more obscure, but great, courses that people need exposure to. These reviews are hopefully geared to the regular golfer, which is to say the golfer who shoots triple digit scores. The sad but true fact is that ninety percent of golfers are hackers.
