Time for a new text editor Feb 28. 059
I’ve had it with Macromedia Homesite, it’s just not enough anymore, come to think of it, was it ever? I need a new text editor. The Mac has plenty of ‘nice’ simple but feature rich editors, is there anything comparable on the PC?
Some must have features:
- Function selector to ease working on large class files
- Simple, uncluttered interface
- Multiple files opened in tabs
- Good code colouring
Can’t think of anymore right now. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
HTML – KIT is pretty cool (not that I have tried it for much other than HTML).Though I still think DWMX 2004 is the best on PC.
Maybe if Macromedia did a cut down ‘code editor’ version of Dreamweaver, then I’d consider it. I just find DW a bit sluggish in it’s current ‘bloated’ form. :(
I’ll check out HTML Kit. Thanks John. :)
You could also try:
* NVU – http://www.nvu.com
* 1st Page 2000 – http://www.evrsoft.com/
* HTML Gate – http://www.mpsoftware.dk/
Ah yes, TopStyle, I may have to splash out on that. :)
I use: MDMX2004, TopStyle Pro 3.10,
and PhpExpertEditor http://www.ankord.com/phpxedit.html …
Try Notepad++
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/
or DEVphp
http://devphp.sourceforge.net/
In case it helps, there are several function browsers add-ins for HomeSite.

UltraEdit is nice, but it doesn’t allow you to set the character encoding, so I’d recommend jEdit and the likes.
