All the rage? Animated favicons Sep 08. 0513

I think I’ve noticed a bit of a new thing (Actually someone else probably noticed it first). Animated favicons. I first spotted this neat little twist over at Poke London and then this morning I spotted one over at Dare too.

Well now I gotta get me one of them. Seen any others?

The first one I saw was at http://pod1.com

Jon, now you just need to get your animated favicon translated into a animated Gravatar. :)

I had a go at creating one for my blog after I found your site through britblog and read this post :D

It was a perfect addition to acheive a TTT acronym effect that reflected the name of the blog better.

I first came across this on a BB I sometimes read:

http://infiniteloop.ceaseless.org/

Doesn’t work in Safari, but then that’s probably a good thing. It’d drive me nuts.

First time I noticed one was quite a while back on MozillaNews

For some obscure reason when Drew and I both worked at Mirashade we once enclosed our company intranet in a scrolling marquee, not just part of it, but the whole page. It was amusing for a few minutes but then the novelty soon wore off.

Pretty neat, even if it’s a novelty. I agree with Rob, it might prove to be quite the distraction with several animated favicons.

Can you say return of marquee madness?

I think that’s just the problem though Ash – if they start appearing in Firefox tabs, for example, and I have a few sites open, it could be quite distracting. We’ll have to see if they start catching on though. The odd one here and there isn’t going to cause too many problems.

Ooh, I haven’t noticed these anywhere before.

I’d have to agree that once and then stop is enough, but I think it’s a nice little idea. It adds a bit more flexibility to favicons.

I don’t think these would annoy me at all. If they do annoy you I would just suggest that you don’t look at them (although that might be easier said than done).

Oooh it did animate then when I came back to the page, so maybe that one does animate once and then stops, and I missed it before? I wonder if they also animate in the browser bookmarks too? Now that could get annoying.

Your site reminds me, I must sort out a Gravatar – wonder if I can get an animated one of those? ;)

Before I posted it did, now it doesn’t… maybe they removed the animation too. :? Or maybe I’m going mad.

I think it’d be ok if the logo only animated the once and then stopped.

But then as you say, one of those things which is nice the first time you spot it, then incredibly annoying once every bugger has one.

I found it on couleur3.ch…
