Xbox 360 to get 1080p Wednesday September 20, 2006

110 High-Definition Xbox 360 games showcased at TGS.

In addition, Microsoft announced that its fall dashboard update, scheduled for release later this year, will allow all Xbox 360 consoles around the world to output game and movie content in 1080p resolution.

Wow, didn’t see that one coming. Up until now the PS3 was slated as the only console capable of outputting 1080p. Hats off to Microsoft for yet again demonstrating their commitment to the Xbox 360 as an evolving platform.

Meh… it’s not true 1080p since there will be no games that support 1080p on the 360. But, it really doesn’t matter because 720p is perfectly fine for normal gaming. Even on a 60” set, 720p upscaled looks fantastic.

1080p is way overkill and, in my opinion, a waste of resources. I’d rather have faster paced action and smoother framerates than higher resolution. The fact that Sony is making such a big deal out of 1080p makes me think that they are trying to compensate for the lack of good gameplay and decent launch titles. 1080p TVs are not even mainstream yet, and when they are I don’t think anyone will care when they see there is practically no difference between 1080p and 720p with a decent upscale method. Especially when 720p res games will be so much faster.

    I’ll pick up a PS3 but I doubt I’ll ever use the 1080p output.

I agree with what you’re saying although from what I’ve heard it ‘is’ true 1080p, but Microsoft are advising that developers stick to 720p. This suggests that some developers may decide to use 1080p on slower paced titles maybe. Like you say though, the difference really isn’t a big deal and I’m not all that sure why Sony are putting so much emphasis on it, more pixels doesn’t mean better games.

well…now with lost planet(being the first game to be released in 1080p for the 360) is out, i probably will use the 1080p setting, but like all you guys said. 720p and 1080i is perfectly fine, for example, look at games like Gears of war, it looks better in 720p than all the ps3 games that run at 1080p put together.
